Celebrating 25 years of trusted partnerships, integrated design, and a shared commitment to creating better homes and experiences.

This year marks a major milestone for LIGHTWORKS. Twenty-five years of innovation, growth, and, most importantly, partnership.
What began in 1999 as a shared vision between founders Troy Dunnington and Todd Walling has grown into a trusted, full-service design/build firm supporting some of Southern California&rsquo;s most respected builders, architects, designers, and homeowners.
<h2>Where It All Began</h2>
Troy and Todd first met while working at a local San Diego design center. Troy was the owner of Lightz On, an electrical subcontractor, and Todd was a lighting specialist. Through collaborating on projects, they quickly discovered a shared passion for lighting, construction, and design, along with a shared frustration with how projects were being delivered.
<img alt="CEO Troy Dunnington and Principal Todd Walling in the beginning of LIGHTWORKS" src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-celebrating-25-years/VDUN1_lightworks-celebrating-25-years_1.jpg" />
CEO Troy Dunnington and Principal Todd Walling in the beginning of LIGHTWORKS
At the time, projects often involved multiple independent subcontractors, including electrical, AV, lighting control, landscape lighting, telephone and data, security, and emerging motorized shading solutions. These groups operated in silos, with little coordination between them, often creating a fragmented experience for both the client and project team.
Troy and Todd believed there was a better way.
LIGHTWORKS was founded on the idea that these services should be integrated and delivered through a single, collaborative partner, bringing clarity, efficiency, and a higher standard of execution to every project.
<img alt="LIGHTWORKS&rsquo; first showroom, opened in 2003" src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-celebrating-25-years/VDUN1_lightworks-celebrating-25-years_2.jpg" />
LIGHTWORKS&rsquo; first showroom, opened in 2003
Reflecting on the company&rsquo;s journey, CEO and Co-Founder Troy Dunnington shared:
&ldquo;From the beginning, our goal was simple: create a better experience for everyone involved in a project. Not just for the client, but for the builders, designers, and trade partners we work alongside every day.
What I am most proud of, 25 years in, is the strength of those relationships. The trust we have built, the way our team shows up for each other, and the culture we have created. It really does feel like a family. That is what has sustained us, and that is what will carry us forward.&rdquo;
Co-Founder and Principal Todd Walling emphasized the company&rsquo;s founding vision and continued motivation:
&ldquo;We started LIGHTWORKS to solve a disconnect we kept seeing between design, construction, and the client experience. Bringing those pieces together in a more collaborative way was the opportunity.&nbsp;
What continues to motivate me is the ability to work alongside talented builders, architects, and designers to create something cohesive and thoughtful. When the entire team is aligned, the result is always better for the project and for the people involved.&rdquo;
<h2>Growing Through Partnership</h2>
Over the past 25 years, LIGHTWORKS has evolved into a team of 30 dedicated professionals, with several employees having been part of the journey since the early days. With expertise spanning smart power electrical, lighting design and fixtures, lighting control, shades, AV, and security, the company has become a true design/build partner.
That growth has been shaped by strong and lasting relationships.
Working alongside leading builders, architects, and interior designers across Southern California, LIGHTWORKS has built its reputation not only on technical expertise, but on collaboration, communication, and trust. Every project is approached as a partnership, bringing together ideas, disciplines, and teams to create a seamless experience from concept through completion.
Barry Fennell, Principal of Wardell Builders, shared:
&ldquo;Working with LIGHTWORKS has been a consistent advantage on our projects. Early involvement from Troy and Todd, alongside the design team and trade partners, sets a strong foundation from the start.
Integrated homes bring complexity, but LIGHTWORKS simplifies the process, from showroom selections through to coordination, creating a more aligned experience for both the client and the team.
That same organization carries through in the field, where clear communication and planning improve efficiency. Their proposals and billing also deliver the transparency our clients expect.
It&rsquo;s a partnership we value and continue to build on.&rdquo;
Relationships with technology partners have also played a key role in the company&rsquo;s continued success. By aligning with industry-leading brands and staying at the forefront of innovation, LIGHTWORKS continues to deliver solutions that are both cutting-edge and reliable.
This commitment has led to notable recognitions, including induction into the Lutron Hall of Fame, one of only 31 dealers worldwide to receive this distinction, as well as Savant Ambassador status, HTA Certification, and designation as a Lutron Black Diamond Dealer.
David Weinstein, Vice President of Residential Sales at Lutron Electronics, reflected on the longstanding partnership with LIGHTWORKS:
&ldquo;For more than two decades, it has been a privilege to work alongside such a talented, loyal, and visionary partner. Your longstanding commitment to Lutron Electronics, and more recently to Ketra and the Intelligent Lighting category, has helped elevate the role of lighting in luxury residential design.
Wishing you and the entire LIGHTWORKS team continued success for many years ahead.&rdquo;
<h2>A Culture That Powers Success</h2>
Behind every successful project is a strong team. LIGHTWORKS has cultivated a culture centered on training, development, and long-term growth, creating an environment where people build careers, not just jobs.
That internal strength translates directly into the quality of work delivered and the relationships built over time. It also continues to attract top talent to the LIGHTWORKS team and reinforces the company&rsquo;s commitment to excellence at every level.
<h2>Looking Ahead</h2>
As LIGHTWORKS celebrates 25 years, the foundation remains the same: a commitment to partnership, a passion for design and technology, and a drive to continuously improve how projects are delivered.
That same mindset extends beyond the jobsite and into the showroom experience. Over the years, LIGHTWORKS has continually evolved its showroom spaces to better support clients, builders, architects, and designers, creating an environment where technology can be experienced firsthand, ideas can be explored collaboratively, and industry partners can come together to connect and innovate.
Today, the showroom continues to serve not only as a reflection of the latest in lighting and smart home technology, but also as a gathering place for the design and building community through educational events, product showcases, and industry networking opportunities.

Celebrating 25 Years of LIGHTWORKS: Built on Partnership, Driven by Purpose

Smart shades help homes adapt to summer sunlight by reducing heat gain, controlling glare, and maintaining comfort throughout the day.

By the middle of summer, sunlight starts behaving differently.
The same windows that fill a room with beautiful morning light in spring can become a source of heat and glare by July. Certain rooms warm up faster. Screens become harder to see. Spaces that were comfortable in the morning feel completely different by the afternoon.
For many homeowners, the response is familiar. Close the blinds. Lower the shades. Turn on the air conditioning.
But shutting out the outdoors is rarely the goal.
The challenge is finding a way to manage sunlight without losing the natural light, views, and connection to the landscape that makes a home feel open in the first place.
<h2>Not All Sunlight Feels the Same</h2>
<img alt="A woman stands outside her home in the sunlight." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-smart-shades/VDUN1_lightworks-smart-shades_1.jpg" />

A home can receive natural light all day and still feel comfortable.
The issue is often direct sunlight and the heat that comes with it.
Large windows are a defining feature in many homes today. They bring in daylight, frame views, and strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. During summer, however, they can also become one of the largest sources of heat gain.
This is particularly noticeable in west-facing rooms where afternoon sunlight is at its strongest.
The result is often uneven comfort throughout the home. One room remains pleasant while another feels noticeably warmer.
<h2>Why Homeowners Are Paying More Attention to Shading</h2>
<img alt="A natural lit bedroom with smart shades that are rolled all the way up." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-smart-shades/VDUN1_lightworks-smart-shades_2.jpg" />
Photo courtesy of Lutron Electronics
Homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to make their homes more responsive to changing conditions throughout the day. Rather than manually adjusting shades as the sun moves, automated shading systems can respond automatically based on time of day, sunlight exposure, or personal preferences.
<h2>The Goal Is Not Darkness</h2>
<img alt="A room in a home with dark or black motorized shades that are down." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-smart-shades/VDUN1_lightworks-smart-shades_3.jpg" />
Photo courtesy of Lutron Electronics
One of the biggest misconceptions about shades is that they exist to block light.
Good shading design does the opposite. It manages daylight.
The goal is to soften direct sunlight, reduce glare, and limit heat gain while still allowing spaces to feel bright and connected to the outdoors.
This balance becomes especially important during summer months when daylight hours are longer, and solar exposure is more intense.
When planned thoughtfully, shading can improve comfort without making a home feel darker.
<h2>A Seasonal Solution with Year-Round Benefits</h2>
<img alt="A dining room table in a naturally lit room with shades drawn open." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-smart-shades/VDUN1_lightworks-smart-shades_4.jpg" />

Summer is often when homeowners first notice the impact of sunlight on comfort. It is also when shading systems become easiest to appreciate.
Systems such as Lutron Palladiom Shades can automatically adjust throughout the day, helping reduce solar heat gain while maintaining the clean architectural aesthetic many homeowners and designers prefer.
The benefits extend beyond summer.
Furniture, flooring, and artwork receive greater protection from UV exposure. Lighting conditions remain more consistent. Spaces feel easier to live in throughout the year.
What begins as a solution for summer comfort often becomes one of the most appreciated features in the home.
<h2>Living More Comfortably with Natural Light</h2>
As temperatures rise and sunlight becomes more intense, thoughtful shading can help maintain comfort while preserving the qualities that make a space feel open and inviting.
At LIGHTWORKS, we work with homeowners, architects, designers, and builders to integrate shading solutions that support comfort, architecture, and everyday living. Through systems such as Lutron Palladiom Shades, we help homes respond more naturally to changing conditions throughout the day.

How Smart Shades Help Homes Respond to Summer Sunlight

Lighting works best when the electrical plan is right. Discover how proper planning improves lighting design, control, and overall home experience.

There&rsquo;s a noticeable difference between a home that is simply well-lit.
What most people do not see is that this kind of lighting does not come from fixtures alone. It comes from how everything is planned behind the walls.
Because when the electrical plan is right, lighting feels effortless. When it is not, even the best design struggles to work the way it should.
<h2>Light Is Felt Before It Is Seen</h2>
<img alt="A neutral colored bedroom with modern lighting design." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-plan/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-plan_1.jpg" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" />
A well-lit home uses layers. General light to define the space. Focused light where it is needed. Subtle light to add depth and texture.
Electrical planning determines how lighting is grouped, how it is controlled, and how it responds as you move through the home. It is what allows lighting to feel calm instead of chaotic.
Without it, even the best lighting design can feel disconnected.
<h2>Where Things Start to Drift</h2>
When electrical planning is handled later in the project, lighting often becomes reactive.
Instead of shaping the space, it adapts to what is already built.
You start to see small compromises. Extra switches added where they were not originally intended. Fixtures placed to fill gaps instead of defining them. Controls that do not quite match how the space is used.
Over time, these small things affect the overall experience.
<h2>When the Foundation Is Right</h2>
When electrical planning is considered early, lighting has room to work the way it should.
You can define lighting zones based on how spaces are used, not just how they are wired. Controls can be simplified into fewer, more intuitive touchpoints. Systems can be prepared to work together from the start.
<ul>
<li>Lighting can shift naturally from day to night</li>
<li>Brightness levels feel consistent across spaces</li>
<li>Controls feel familiar wherever you are in the home</li>
<li>Lighting and shading respond together, not separately</li>
</ul>
<img alt="Four images of the same room in four different stages of lighting." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-plan/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-plan_2.jpg" />

<h2>A Home That Feels Considered</h2>
In well-designed homes, there is a sense of ease.
You do not think about where switches are. You do not adjust lighting constantly. You do not notice the system.
Everything feels like it is already set the way it should be.
That level of ease comes from coordination. Lighting design, electrical planning, and system integration all working toward the same outcome.
<h2>Designing for Everyday Use</h2>
<img alt="An exterior shot of a home with warm lighting inside." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-plan/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-plan_3.jpg" />
Source: Lutron
The way lighting behaves should reflect how a home is lived in. These are not features added at the end. They are outcomes of decisions made early in the process.
When electrical planning supports lighting design from the beginning, the home becomes more adaptable without becoming more complicated.
That balance is what defines a well-integrated space.
<h2>A More Thoughtful Way to Design Lighting</h2>
When lighting is done right, it becomes part of the architecture of the home. It shapes how spaces feel without ever needing attention.
That kind of result is not driven by fixtures alone. It comes from decisions made early, where electrical planning and lighting design are considered together, not separately.
This is what allows a home to feel balanced. Comfortable during the day. Calm in the evening. Easy to live in without constant adjustment.
At LIGHTWORKS, we work closely with homeowners, designers, and builders to ensure lighting and electrical planning are aligned from the beginning. The focus is not on adding more, but on getting it right.

Lighting Works Best When the Electrical Plan Is Right

Discover why a lighting control system is essential in modern smart homes. Learn how it improves comfort, design, function, and overall homeowner experience.

When designing a smart home, there are many exciting elements to consider. Audio systems, automated shading, climate control, and security all play important roles.
But there is one system that touches every room, every day: lighting.
<img alt="A modern luxury kitchen with green cabinetry." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home_1.jpg" />
Source: Lutron
Every home needs lighting. And how that lighting is controlled shapes the way the home looks, feels, and functions. Long before audio plays or shades move, the lights define the atmosphere.
That is why lighting control is best considered early in the design process. It is not simply a feature. It is a fundamental layer that supports everything else.
Lighting control allows:
<ul>
<li>Multiple fixture types to work together intentionally</li>
<li>Spaces to transition smoothly from morning to evening</li>
<li>Clean, simplified wall controls</li>
<li>Coordination with shading, audio, and climate systems</li>
</ul>
It transforms lighting from individual switches into a unified experience.
<h2>Why Lighting Control Matters</h2>
<h3>Creates Balanced Lighting Environments</h3>
Recessed downlights, pendants, linear lighting, and accent fixtures are calibrated to complement one another. The space feels intentional and composed.
<img alt="A lighting control for a home on a gray wall." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home_2.jpg" /> Source: Lutron
<h3>Builds Scenes That Shape the Day</h3>
Lighting scenes are more than preset dim levels. They create atmosphere.
<img alt="A modern living room and kitchen in a dimlly lit home." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home_3.jpg" /> Source: Lutron
<h3>Simplifies the Walls</h3>
A single keypad can replace multiple switches. The visual result is cleaner architecture and more intuitive control.
<img alt="A white keypad for lighting on a white wall. " src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home_4.jpg" /> Source: Lutron
<h3>Connects With the Whole Home</h3>
Lighting can coordinate with shading, audio, climate, and security, allowing the home to function as one cohesive system.
<img alt="A room full of windows with modern furniture and a TV." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-control-smart-home_5.jpg" /> Source: Lutron
<h2>Where Lighting Control Makes the Biggest Impact</h2>
Lighting control enhances nearly every room, but it becomes especially powerful in:
<ul>
<li>Open-concept living spaces</li>
<li>Homes with layered architectural and decorative lighting</li>
<li>Rooms with strong natural daylight</li>
<li>Kitchens and great rooms with multiple daily functions</li>
<li>Primary suites designed around comfort</li>
<li>Homes integrating automated shading or whole-home audio</li>
</ul>
In these spaces, lighting plays a dynamic role throughout the day. Coordinated control ensures the environment feels balanced at every moment.
<h2>Bringing Lighting Control Into the Design Process</h2>
Lighting control delivers the greatest impact when planned early.
When included from the beginning:
<ul>
<li>Keypad placement aligns with architecture</li>
<li>Lighting scenes enhance design intent</li>
<li>Shading and AV systems coordinate naturally</li>
<li>Electrical planning remains flexible</li>
<li>The finished home feels unified</li>
</ul>
Early planning ensures the lighting system fully supports the vision for the space.

Why Lighting Control Is the True Foundation of a Modern Smart Home

Electrical planning should start early in home design. Discover how it improves lighting, simplifies controls, and creates a more seamless living experience.

Most people begin a home project thinking about layout, materials, and finishes. Where the kitchen sits. How the living space opens. What the overall look and feel will be.
Electrical planning rarely comes up at this stage.
It usually enters the conversation later, when construction is already moving. By then, many of the important decisions have already been made. And that is where problems begin.
Because in a well-designed home, electrical planning is not a separate layer. It is part of the design itself.
<h2>The Hidden Framework Behind Electrical Planning</h2>
<img alt="An overhead view of hands working on an interior design blueprint." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-interior-planning/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-interior-planning_1.jpg" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" />
Every clean ceiling, every well-placed light, and every seamless control point relies on decisions made behind the walls.
Where power runs. How circuits are grouped. Where controls are placed. How lighting systems connect.
These are not just technical details. They shape how the home looks and how it feels to live in.
In high-end residential projects, electrical planning is closely tied to lighting design and smart home integration. When done properly, it allows lighting, shading, and controls to work together as one system.
When electrical planning is treated as an afterthought, the result often shows up in subtle but frustrating ways:
<ul>
<li>Too many switches on the wall</li>
<li>Lighting that feels uneven or harsh</li>
<li>Visible fixtures that were never meant to be focal points</li>
<li>Spaces that don&rsquo;t quite function the way they should</li>
</ul>
None of these are surface-level design problems. They often begin with how the electrical plan was approached.
<h2>Why Early Electrical Planning Changes the Outcome</h2>
<img alt="A wall light control panel from Lutron." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-interior-planning/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-interior-planning_2.jpg" />
Source: Lutron
When electrical planning begins alongside the design, everything becomes more intentional.
Lighting layouts align with architectural lines. Controls are placed where they make sense. Power is distributed based on how each space is used.
This is where electrical planning and lighting design work together to create a better living experience.
The result is a home that feels quieter and more refined. Fewer switches. Cleaner ceilings. Lighting that feels balanced and comfortable.
<ul>
<li>Reducing multiple switches into a single control point requires early coordination</li>
<li>Creating lighting scenes that shift naturally throughout the day depends on how systems are grouped from the start</li>
<li>Integrating lighting and shading into one experience only works when they are planned together</li>
</ul>
In modern homes, this level of simplicity is not accidental. It comes from thoughtful planning of electrical systems, lighting control, and smart home integration from the very beginning.
<h2>Designing a Cohesive Home Through Electrical Planning</h2>
<img alt="A modern home exterior at dusk all lit up from the inside." src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-interior-planning/VDUN1_lightworks-electrical-interior-planning_3.jpg" />
Source: Lutron
Electrical planning is often approached room by room. But a home is experienced.
The way light transitions from one space to another matters. The consistency of controls matters. How the home responds throughout the day matters. Starting early makes it possible to design a cohesive home where lighting, electrical systems, and smart controls feel unified.
You can create consistency in how spaces are lit. You can ensure controls feel familiar no matter where you are. You can design transitions that feel natural, not abrupt. This level of integration is what separates a standard home from a well-designed, high-end living environment. It also improves coordination across the project.
Architects, interior designers, builders, and technology partners can align early instead of adjusting later. This reduces delays, avoids last-minute changes, and protects the integrity of the design.
<h2>Designing Around How You Live</h2>
At its core, electrical planning is not about wiring. It is about how you live in your home.
Do you prefer softer lighting in the evening? Do you move through spaces frequently? Do you want your home to respond automatically or remain simple and manual? These decisions shape everything behind the scenes.
In a well-integrated home, electrical planning supports lighting control, shading systems, and overall comfort without adding complexity.
When considered early, the result is a home that feels natural to live in. Not something you have to think about or adjust to.
<h2>Bringing It All Together</h2>
If you are planning a new home or a major renovation, electrical planning should be part of the conversation from the very beginning. Not as a technical layer added later, but as part of the design itself.
At LIGHTWORKS, we work closely with homeowners, designers, and builders to align electrical planning with the overall vision of the home. The goal is simple. Create spaces that feel considered, comfortable, and easy to live in.

Why Electrical Planning Should Start with the Design, Not After

Explore the lighting and shading trends from CEDIA 2026, including new smart lighting, automated shades, fabrics, and integrated home control.

CEDIA 2026 gave the LIGHTWORKS team a closer look at what is next in residential lighting, automated shading, and smart home control. Across the show, one direction stood out: technology is becoming more closely connected to the design of the home.

Lighting fixtures and controls are working more cohesively. Automated window treatments are offering more flexibility in fabrics, hardware, and architectural integration. And the technology behind these systems is becoming easier to incorporate without competing with the design.

Here are a few of the lighting and shading innovations from CEDIA 2026 that caught our attention.

<h2>Lutron Orluna Brings Lighting and Control Closer Together</h2>

One of the standout lighting introductions was Lutron Orluna, making its North American debut at CEDIA 2026.

<img alt="Lutron Orluna architectural lighting fixtures on display at CEDIA 2026" src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new_1.jpg" />
Lutron introduced its new Orluna lighting range, designed to work with RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks for more integrated lighting and control.

The architectural lighting collection expands the possibilities for approaching the fixture, quality of light, and control as parts of the same lighting experience. Instead of treating fixtures and control as separate decisions, they can be considered more cohesively from the beginning.

For LIGHTWORKS, this reflects an important direction in luxury residential lighting design. The best results come when lighting design and lighting control work together, allowing the fixtures, dimming, quality of light, and everyday control to support the architecture as one complete system.

<h2>New Ideas in Automated Shading</h2>

Shading was another area where design and integration came together in interesting ways at CEDIA 2026.

Lutron Palladiom Drapery stood out for bringing automated control into a more traditional drapery form. The system pairs the refined appearance of a drapery rod with quiet motorized movement, giving designers another way to incorporate automation while keeping the hardware intentional within the room.

<img alt="Lutron Palladiom motorized drapery hanging from a traditional-style drapery rod" src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new_2.jpg" />
Lutron showcased its new Palladiom Drapery, pairing the look of a traditional drapery rod with quiet, automated control.

Crestron also introduced new shade fabrics, expanding the design possibilities for automated window treatments. More choices in texture, openness, and finish give designers greater flexibility to balance natural light, privacy, glare control, and the overall interior palette.

<img alt="Selection of new Crestron automated shade fabric samples in various textures and finishes" src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new_3.jpg" />
Crestron introduced a new range of shade fabrics, expanding the design options for automated window treatments.

New innovations in shade pockets were also a standout.

The team was especially impressed with Blindspace concealed shade pocket systems, which can be built into the ceiling, wall, or window reveal so the roller shade is completely hidden when raised. The systems are compatible with major shading platforms, including Lutron, Somfy, Crestron, and others, offering a clean architectural alternative to a traditional exposed shade pocket.

<img alt="Blindspace concealed shade pocket recessed into a ceiling above a window with a roller shade" src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new_4.jpg" />
Blindspace concealed shade pockets allow roller shades to disappear into the ceiling, wall, or window reveal when raised.

Savant also introduced new shade pocket options designed to conceal automated shades within the architecture.

<img alt="Savant shade pocket concealing an automated window shade within the surrounding architecture" src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new_5.jpg" />
Savant introduced new shade pockets designed to conceal automated shades for a cleaner architectural finish.

Taken together, these introductions point to a broader shift in motorized shading. There are more ways to coordinate window treatments with the architecture, more design flexibility at the window, and more opportunities to make the technology disappear when it is not in use.

<h2>AI Is Beginning to Influence Home Control</h2>

Crestron also showcased new AI-powered home control capabilities, offering a glimpse at how artificial intelligence could play a growing role in the connected home.

<img alt="Crestron AI-powered home control interface demonstrated at CEDIA 2026" src="https://cdn.avbportal.com/assets/blog/prosource_member_blogs/VDUN1/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new/VDUN1_lightworks-lighting-shading-new_6.jpg" />
Crestron showcased new AI capabilities, giving our team a look at how AI could play a growing role in intelligent home control.

Lighting, shades, climate, and other systems can already respond to schedules, scenes, and homeowner preferences. AI introduces the possibility for those systems to become even more responsive to patterns and the way people actually use their homes.

For LIGHTWORKS, the value will ultimately come down to how useful and intuitive that intelligence becomes for the homeowner. It is an area we will continue watching as the technology develops.

<h2>What We&rsquo;re Taking Away From CEDIA</h2>

What stood out most this year was how much attention manufacturers are giving to the relationship between technology and design.

Orluna brings architectural lighting and intelligent control closer together. New drapery, fabrics, and concealed shade pockets give designers more options at the window. Smarter control continues to expand what an integrated home can do behind the scenes.

For homeowners and design teams, that means more flexibility to make lighting, shading, and home automation feel intentional from the beginning rather than layered in later.

These are the kinds of developments we get excited about at LIGHTWORKS because they support the way we

<h2>Let the Light In &mdash; But Only When You Want It</h2>
Natural light brings beauty, warmth, and energy into a home. But when it causes glare, heat, or fades your furnishings, it becomes more of a hassle than a luxury.
That&rsquo;s where automated shades make a difference.
More and more homeowners are investing in smart shading systems that do more than just cover windows. These systems give you control over natural light&mdash;letting you decide how much to let in, when to block it, and how your space should feel throughout the day.
At LIGHTWORKS, we help clients across San Diego take advantage of solutions from trusted brands like Lutron, bringing comfort, privacy, and design together with one simple touch.
<h2>What Are Automated Shades, and Why Do They Matter?</h2>

Custom Motorized Shading Solution &ndash; Crystal Cove Project
<a href="https://www.sdlightworks.com/residential-solutions/motorized-shades-drapes">Automated shades</a> are motorized window treatments you can control using a remote, wall keypad, app, or even voice commands. They can open and close on a schedule, adjust automatically based on sunlight, or respond instantly to your needs.
But what really makes them powerful is this: they optimize natural light to fit your lifestyle.
Rather than battling glare or constantly adjusting curtains, your home can adapt in real time&mdash;reducing heat, protecting furniture, and helping you sleep better.

<li>Control glare without losing light:&nbsp;Sheer shades can filter bright sun so you can work, cook, or relax comfortably&mdash;no need to close off the outdoors.</li>
<li>Protect flooring and furniture:&nbsp;UV rays can damage interiors over time. Smart shades preserve the look and lifespan of your space.</li>
<li>Improve sleep and privacy:&nbsp;Blackout shades block light fully for bedrooms or media rooms, and can lower automatically in the evening.</li>
<li>Save energy year-round:&nbsp;Close shades during hot afternoons to reduce cooling costs, or open them in winter mornings to let warmth in.</li>
<li>Add a clean, modern look:&nbsp;With hidden tracks and custom finishes, today&rsquo;s shading systems look as good as they perform.</li>
